The Best Autumn Scents for Your Home (and How to Pick Yours)

There's a specific evening every October when you give in. The heating goes on, the big jumper comes out, and the house suddenly feels like it needs to smell of something warmer than fresh linen.

This is our guide to doing that properly. Eight autumn scents, what each one smells like, and who it suits. And because it's the season for it, the whole autumn range is 10% off until 31 October.

The spicy ones

Pumpkin Spice is the obvious place to start. Pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and ginger. Sweet, warm, and exactly what it says on the box. You can have it as wax melts, a candle or a reed diffuser.

Autumn Nights is pumpkin spice's more serious older sibling. Cinnamon and clove again, but with frankincense, myrrh and cedarwood underneath. Less bakery, more log fire. If you find sweet scents a bit much, start here.

Gingerbread Cookies sits on the fence between autumn and Christmas and doesn't mind at all. Gingerbread, cinnamon, anise, maple syrup and vanilla. Put it on in October and nobody can accuse you of being early.

The sweet ones

Toasted Marshmallow is candy floss, vanilla and brown sugar. It smells like bonfire night without the smoke in your hair, which makes it a good one for the first week of November.

Woodland Berries is juniper, elderberry and cranberry. Fruity and bright, and a nice break if the house is already full of cinnamon.

The grown-up ones

Pomegranate Noir is plum, pomegranate and rose over cedarwood, amber and vanilla. Rich, a bit dramatic, and our pick for the living room when people are coming round.

Tonka and Myrrh is cedar, amber, vanilla, tonka bean and myrrh. Warm and soft. A good evening scent.

Crackling Embers is tobacco leaf, precious woods, amber and vanilla. If you don't have an open fire, this is the next best thing.

Melts, candle or diffuser?

Wax melts are the ones to choose if you like to change your mind. Each box has 16, so you can run a different scent every evening.

A candle is for the evenings you actually sit down. It's as much about the light as the smell.

A reed diffuser works in the background with no flame and nothing to switch on. Hallways and bathrooms are where they earn their keep.

Can't decide?

That's what the Autumn Selection box is for. Sixteen wax melts across four scents: Roasted Chestnuts, Autumn Nights, Pumpkin Spice and Toasted Marshmallow. Work through it and you'll know your favourite by Halloween.

And if your melter is looking a bit summery, we've got a ceramic pumpkin and a ghost holding a pumpkin. We're not sorry.
