Essential oils have been around for a while and with popularity increasing they are being used as a natural remedy to help ease various symptoms. Not only this, but they are commonly used to create beauty products as they have many benefits for hair, skin and the face (but we'll get into that later). They are full of uses. That's why we love em'! 

Anxiety is a common health issue that everybody, at some point in their life will struggle with. Whether it's nerves before an interview, or meeting up with friends in a public place, anxiety comes in loads of different forms and sometimes can be more extreme than other cases. I want to remind you that everyone will experience it differently and that is absolutely fine!

We live in real busy world that sometimes feels non-stop. It is hard to find something that is going encourage relaxation. The simplicity and accessibility of essential oils is what make them so easy to help us take five minutes. You can create an atmosphere of utter ZEN! 

Let me paint a picture for you:

You get home from a long day at work (sorry about that), you're tired right? On some days can you really be bothered to move? Imma say, no, it's unlikely. Grab your diffuser, your favourite essential oil, pop a few drops in and there we have it! Before you know it the fragrance from your favourite scent will diffuse into the air creating a sense of relaxation, all from the comfort of your home own! Go figure. What more you could you want? Lavender

Of course! The most popular essential oil going, the Beyoncé of all essential oils! Originating in the Mediterranean, lavender is now grown worldwide. The oil is extracted by distillation, this involves harvested flowers being steamed and then oil being collected. 
We're definitely no stranger to the benefits lavender can bring, it has been used a remedy for stress and anxiety since, well forever. Known for its pungent, sweet and floral scent, it has calming properties that can help promote relaxation. 
In 2005, studies showed that 200 people waiting for a dentist appointment found that breathing in Lavender helped ease nerves and anxiety.

  Bergamot

A citrusy burst of freshness! Bergamot has been known to create an energy boosting atmosphere that can help with stress and anxiety. The oil is extracted from the peel of the fruit that grows on orange trees. Native to Italy it has a floral but spicy, citrus scent that produces a de-stressing atmosphere. 
A study from 2013 concluded that people waiting for minor surgery, who inhaled water vapor including bergamot reduced anxiety levels.

 Patchouli 

Patchouli
Patchouli is known to be rich and earthy and improves with age, like a fine wine, unlike other oils. Native to South East Asia it is extracted by steam distillation from the leaves of the patchouli plant. It is commonly used to help ease anxiety and stress as well as promote calmness. The perfect base oil if your wanting to create a de-stressing blend with other essential oils. 
A study with 60 women, showed that when inhaling patchouli with a blend of lemongrass and ylang-ylang it was more effective at easing anxiety than lavender! (no shade to lavender though, still no.1)

Ylang-Ylang essential oil can be used to ease anxiety and is known to boost your mood. Native to countries that are in the Indian Ocean ylang-ylang is a fruity, flowery and rich aroma, that is extracted through distillation from the star-shaped flower.  
A small study found that when inhaled or rubbed on skin it reduced anxiety and boosted self-esteem...an underrated essential oil! but a must when

How to Use Essential Oils for Anxiety? 

Oil Icon Grab your favourite massage/carrier oil and add 2-5 drops of your chosen essential oil to create a relaxing massage oil to help soothe muscles. 

Oil Icon For on-the-go relaxation, add few drops to a cloth to use to calm yourself down in stressful situations by inhaling the aroma. (traffic jams normally a good idea for this one)

Oil Icon Adding a few drops into a diffuser/humidifier can help to create a de-stressing and calming atmosphere at home. Tiny fragrance particles are released into the air and will bring a freshness to your home. 

 Oil Icon Mix water with 2-5 drops of your chosen essential oil and spray on bedding and furniture to bring freshness and a soothing feel to your home. 

Oil Icon For ultimate relaxation add 2-5 drops to a hot bath, mix in and then soak. The aroma will gently diffuse into your bathroom through the steam from the hot water, allow yourself to inhale the fragrance to help ease anxiety.

What is a carrier oil?

When it comes to using essential oils always dilute with a carrier oil if applying to skin! 

Carrier oils generally have little or no scent, they provide the perfect base to dilute essential oils. Perfect for creating lotions, massage oils, or any beauty products they help ease stress and moisturize skin. Coconut oil, Jojoba Oil, Argan Oil and Avocado Oil are some common examples, they're so many others out there to choose from, that will suit your skin type. 

It is important to do a patch test first when using any of these products on your skin, to ensure you do not have any allergic reactions.
